Thousands welcome a hometown hero
Thousands of supporters lined the 20-mile route from Cap-Haitien to Bas-Limbe to welcome Haiti striker Frantzdy Pierrot home, continuing a series of grassroots celebrations honoring Les Grenadiers historic return to the FIFA World Cup after 52 years. Rather than riding inside his vehicle, the striker stood in the back of a pickup truck for the dusty journey. I traveled this road when I was growing up in Haiti, he said. I can still do it today.
From these streets to the world stage
Pierrot was raised in Bas-Limbe until age 11, playing football in the same streets where thousands now celebrated him. His father Destine watched from the crowd: As a child, he played football in these streets with very limited resources. Today I am proud of the man he has become. At City Hall, Pierrot received a plaque recognizing his contribution to Haitian football and told the crowd: There are some expressions of affection that you can only receive at home.
Giving back to the next generation
Since 2020, Pierrot has supported local club Elite FC of Bas-Limbe through his foundation, providing equipment for U-10, U-15, and U-20 youth teams. Bas-Limbe gave me this opportunity, he said. I am the first person from this community to represent it at this level, and I believe it is my responsibility to help the next generation.
Why these celebrations matter
Les Grenadiers never celebrated qualification on home soil — gang violence forced every match abroad. These grassroots celebrations, organized by municipalities with no government support, are the first chance for supporters to see their heroes in person. As one resident said: These players show the world that Haiti can still produce greatness, even in the middle of crisis.
